The Watch PIT | Problems, Ideas, Thoughts.

Alvin

It's been a while since I did a random PIT post, but as the sales appear, and the grails appear, offers, special offers everywhere. So special in fact that they threaten my very financial future. I knew I should have taken that overtime when it was going, oh damn it all. There is a watch that has been on my mind for ages, it's been on Watchfinder for several months, and every once in a while I will pop in and see if it hasn't sold. The watch is an immense, multi-facted, complicated, precious son of a beautiful bitch. It is the Zenith El Primero Windsor Annual Calendar Limited Edition.

There is a single stainless steel version for sale on Chrono24 and it is around £4700, this rose-gold one I'm going cuckoo for was £7,750, and is now £6,590. That is an absolutely fantastic deal. I have an emergency credit card on standby for if the AD calls, the thing with Rolex is you know you can sell it if you need to, you might lose a few hundred but that's ok, with this, it would be lost money. To be honest that's fine with me, but it's not ok with future me and his financial situation. Anyway, it is one of the best dials I've seen for balance and poise, small seconds, annual calender, chronograph, applied arabic hour markers, surrounds on both date windows, and some patina creeping in. It's a bit old, 2016, it's bit big at 42mm, but it's fabulous. As a value proposition, you can't deny it. I want it so bad, I have wanted it for so long. So, so long. It's such a wonderful specimen, ah man.

It's marvellous, now, moving on, an entirely different prospect, but it is a special case too. Forged carbon and titanium in fact, it's the Tudor Pelagos FXD Chrono Alinghi Red Bull Racing, tis a long name yes.

I tried on the non chrono and it felt right (left), these are coming down to around £2300 from £3300 RRP which is good, I would try and be cheeky and aim for under £2000 though.

I'd say value-wise, the date with chrono makes more sense. It's a sport watch, lightweight and technical, it should max out the sporty vibes which the Chrono does. I'm keen on getting some non-steel watches in the collection so this fits the bill too. I love the pronounced jaggedy bezel and the writing on the chapter ring. It's £4560 RRP but there are a number on Chrono24 at £3500 mark, could it go under £3000, go on markets, do your worst.

I just really like what it's offering, but I want to be cheaper, that's fair isn't it. Come on someone, drop your price.

It is a bit big though, I don't mean the photo, I mean it's a 43mm case.

I also want a JLC Reverso Duoface, but they're just too expensive so that's it. No photo's, I can't even afford the photos, nothing to see here...

Speaking of expensive, go for Rolex, go for Sky Dwellers, go for waiting lists. I will never get my mint green dial on jubilee from the AD, ever. Even if I did, RRP is £14,050, which is madness (£13,850 on regular oyster bracelet). I know where you can get a proper precious metal annual calender for much more cheaper, but not cheap enough. Sky-Dweller white dial pre-owned prices are down to low £13k, there's even a white dial on jubilee (usually pricer) for £13,995 - that is unheard of, until now, obviously. Just look at this thing, it's a stunner, it's got lustful appeal. It's a mokkori watch...

To put it in context, for the price of a new Sky-Dweller, I could rent an apartment by the sea for a year, or spend a 5* month in the Maldives. I could buy a half decent pre-owned car, or I could redo my kitchen to a medium good standard. This is the best one, I could buy (all new);

  • iPhone 16 (£800),

  • 16" Macbook Pro M4 (£2500),

  • Samsung 49" ultrawidescreen monitor (£1000),

  • Nikon Z6 III mirrorless camera (£2300)

  • DJI Air 3S drone (£1500),

  • The Zenith Captain above (£6600)

And some accessories for each thing (but I have most of these already...). Watches are stupid... yea, stupid cool.

I am still very much after a Rolex Milgauss as well, the one above is a mint 2017 example for £8655, with box and papers. I have to make a plan. One option is instead of buying an apartment by the sea, I will rent and spend the deposit money on a few watches...

Well I have vented, hopefully that will stop me from spending any serious money. I'm off to Ali express to find a bargain to satisfy my urges.

Yours Zenithfully,

Alvin

P.S. I will start prepping the watches of year posts next, that's always fun!
